Black clouds of xenophobia gather over Radvadur, the western province of the Empire. The political climate is strained and fragile. A surge of Nymph refugees has stirred widespread hostility towards non-humans. When the investigation of a gruesome triple murder linked to the refugee camp ensues, it takes Inspector Käyru Skaer and his lover, Count Ellydhar Finn-Jánn, along an unusual path, at the end of which a precious gift awaits.

Käyru and Elly are worlds apart in social standing, but they have found common ground in the bedroom—up against the wall and the stable doors, too. The arrangement between them ought to have been temporary and of no consequence. As their circumstances change, will they find the courage to risk their hearts?

As from 14th December 2017, The Poison Within also includes a short bonus read titled A Late Bite to Eat.

The Poison Within An Order Universe Short Story Inspector Skaer Book 1 edition by Kasia Bacon Romance eBooks

This is my first book by Kasia Bacon, but it won’t be my last. I was really impressed with this short story. I read a lot of short stories, and a lot of them fall short on being able to produce a complete fleshed out story with well-developed and complex characters and still manage to throw in some world building in such a short story.

I am happy to say that The Poison Within by Kasia Bacon didn’t fall into that trap. This short story had well-developed and complex characters. The world that Kasia built for them was detailed and vibrant. The plot was exciting and had a hint of suspense to it that I found enjoyable. The story also had characters from two different social standings, and so they couldn’t be together openly. I also enjoyed the fantasy part of the book with the nymphs and Furia and a half-elven healer. The story also flowed nicely and was easy to read. The book has also been edited which is always a nice treat when reading a self-published story.

The story takes place in Radvadur, the westernmost region of the Empire, neighboring the powerful Elven Country on one side and unpredictable wild tribes on the other. The political climate is strained and fragile, and a surge of Nymph refugees has stirred widespread hostility toward non-humans. Ellydhar Finn-Jánn, the Count of Radvadur, is the lover of Inspector Käyru Skaer. Talk about two people from vastly different social standings, but they complement each other very well. And even though they have to keep their relationship hidden, I never got the sense from Elly that he is ashamed of Käyru for being an Inspector and so far beneath him in social standings.

The heart wants what the heart wants. But being the lord of a province riddled with unrest and flooded by a surge of Nymph refugees took up a huge chunk of Elly’s time and health. Elly’s father died of lung disease at a young age, and when Elly develops a cough, he refuses to see a healer, afraid that he will be told that he has the same disease as his father. While they are at an inn on the outskirts of the town of Azlě, Inspector Skaer is called to a crime scene and with the help of his lover, they will unravel who the murder is and get a precious gift in return.

The relationship between Elly and Käyru started out as temporary and of no consequences but as their circumstances change, will they find the courage to risk their hearts? The chemistry between them is hot, and I can’t wait to see what awaits them in the next book in the series.

The Poison Within An Order Universe Short Story Inspector Skaer Book 1 edition by Kasia Bacon Romance eBooks Reviews

This story has a little of everything that you'd expect from a fantasy. But it's unique too.

The first thing I noticed were the clash of classes. That's always a hot button for me. Aristocrat and blue collar coming together, despite the odds. It's weird because I don't like that in contemporary settings, but in fantasy...well, it's so romantic. I think because it feels so forbidden and like the element of danger is heightened. And well, it's hot too. Obviously.

I absolutely LOVE the idea of a series focused around "The Order." We have seen this before in the first book of The Order called, The Mutt. The Mutt introduced us to what I would describe as training grounds of The Order. But with elves...ELVES!!!!!!!!

I'm smitten by this author's writing. The scenes are painted in a way that takes me to another world and makes me believe it. The writing itself is superb. I mean, seriously superb.

I have to say that 1. I'm not a huge fan of mystery, usually. And 2. I don't care for shorts. But it's actually because this is a short...I can totally dig it. The mystery is resolved rather quickly. Excellent for a person of my taste (uh...simple minded with a very short attention span).

This story is hot, romantic, dangerous, and exciting.

5 stars...A must read
I think Kasia Bacon is trying to kill me. Seriously. With each short story she gives us I find myself sucked in and surrounded by this universe she has created and so deeply involved in the relationship of the couples she gives us, that when it ends. I die a little. But wait… isn’t an orgasm or La Petite Mort also called a little death? Hmm. There may be something to this after all.

This starts out so romantic I had to stop reading after the first chapter to go back and read it again. I love established couples and we get that with Käyru and Elly even though their relationship of two years is one that has to be hidden.

You see, Käyru is of the low born variety though he’s career as Inspector Skaer and his reputation isn’t one to trifle with but his lover, Elly now he is a Count and those two stations don’t mix well in polite or any of the Radvadur society. And yet, its couples like these that make me swoon. The idea that love transcends all and you love who you love no matter what makes my hopeless romantic heart sing.

“I loved the fact that he trusted me.
I loved his spirited disposition.
I loved him. “

So, this book takes place in The Order Universe and while it can be read as a standalone, I suggest reading the others because small details (*cough* Assassins’ Guild*cough*) make more sense if you have? You dig? Okay.

After that first swoony chapter of lovers in love but not saying the words, they are interrupted when Käyru is needed on a case and must leave. This hurt, not only because they are parted but because Käyru is so worried about Elly and this cough he has and if he will contract the family illness. So yeah, we have romance and we have angst because Elly brushes stuff off, Käyru frets and then we have murder. *gives jazz hands*

I’ll leave the mystery of the murders up to you to experience when, yes when, you read this but just know, they lead us to a few characters that had my attention immediately. IF you are reading or will read the latest version, there is a bonus after Käyru and Elly’s story which I absolutely loved that gives a bit more depth into who this Furia, Eryssa and her beloved Caylii are who show up.

The idea of the Furia was incredible. I loved who they are, what they can do and what they can give…freely. It makes so much sense now, the title, the cover and just all of it that I think I need another read of this to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

Now, this is short and ends with a to be continued” that I want because Käyru has a bit of explaining to do when it comes to Elly and his health. Ya know? I mean, I will probably read that scene through my fingers and hiding under covers because it will be so uncomfortable but I can’t see him keeping silent for long.

The end was just a swoony as the beginning and I can’t wait for more.

Onto “A Late Bite to Eat…”

You’d think I’d be prepared for emotions right? Wrong. This short, this bit with Eryssa and Caylii after their deal in The Poison Within was gorgeous. Eryssa is beautiful with how she cares for Caylii and the lengths she will go to make sure she is safe even if that means denying what she needs most, blood. But with the help of a “brother” it gives her the opportunity to satiate her hunger and for us to get deeper in her head.

I looked over at the stunning face of the woman that quietly commandeered ownership of my heart.

I love that Eryssa seems cold on the surface as a Furia. When we first met her and she asked Käyru if there was someone he loved I knew there was much more to her than blood. She is a fighter, she is a healer, she is a lover and she battles the sides these herself and how Caylii sees her.

I really dug Eryssa. She has this snark about her that is relatable and I covet her burnt-red, knee-high leather boots!

Did I tell you anything about this one? I dunno. I just know that it’s another short of pure emotion, action and intrigue from the author that again, killed me a little when it ended. I hope there will be more of Käyru and Elly as well as Eryssa and Caylii, because their stories are both far from over. Right?
